Fremont Education Foundation Projects Funded in 2007/2008

Outdoor Education - This year, the Foundation allocated more than $27,000 to the Outdoor Education Committee's initiatives. The Outdoor Education Committee has exciting plans to enhance the un-developable 40 acres behind the elementary and intermediate schools. This area features woodlands, wetlands and prairies and will be enhanced to be used as an extension of the school. The project is scheduled in three phases. Stay tuned for more information on this exciting project!!

Versatiles - Research-based materials give students the opportunity to use hands-on manipulatives to deepen their conceptual understanding and application of reading skills (4th grade).

Interactive Phonics Rugs - We were intrigued but concerned about how rugs would fit into the FEF mission. We initially funded on rug as a pilot and asked for feedback before considering funding the other five rugs requested (one per classroom). The kindergarten team leapt into action, developed uses for the rugs, and reported back to the Foundation with a polished report. Subsequently, we funded the additional five rugs.  For more information on the phonic rugs used by the kindergarten team click on the following link.

Medieval Days - This is a program the Foundation has funded in the past. However, this year, the sixth grade team enhanced the program from a simple Knight and Squire Presentation to an entire Medieval Day. The sixth grade will spend the entire day experiencing activities of the Middle Ages.

Visiting Author Program - Co-funded by the PTO, this program allows a local author to spend a week at the elementary school teaching students the ins and outs of writing and publishing children's stories or poetry. The author also holds on "family night" during the week.

Character Counts! - This program offered at the Intermediate School teaches trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship.

Speaker Presentation for Parents/Teachers - "Building Positive Relationships with Your Child/Teen" - An evening presentation featuring Matthew Selekman, MSW, LCSW, well-known and entertaining speaker.

Ongoing Projects (Funded for more than one year)

Outdoor Education - Developed outdoor education centers at the elementary and middle schools.   Watch for this program to continue to grow!   One garden developed through a $5,000 financial award from the Chicago Botanic Gardens.   For more information visit our Outdoor Education link.

Character Counts! www.charactercounts.org - Funded this program that teaches trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship.
